This piece was inspired by the phrase "New York State of Mind." It is a surreal scene that intends to embrace the contrast between rural upstate New York and New York City, one of the largest cities in the world. In this piece, Billy Joel stands in the pose of the Statue of Liberty. With his right hand he hails a taxi cab, and in his left arm he holds a box of the packing material “wood wool.” This is also known as “excelsior” which is the state motto of New York, and is the expression to which the hot air balloon and the title of this painting refer. The apple is symbolic of both the state and the city, being the state fruit and the Big Apple. In the background the number of cows in curiously organized rows represents the year 1788 when New York officially became a state.
This painting was done in oil on top of acrylic on a gallery wrapped canvas with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.
Mixed media refers to an artwork that is created using several different types of traditional art media, for example oil paint, ink and collage. The specific media used for each mixed media piece on notes section.
Canvas is a heavy-duty fabric used as a painting surface. When a canvas artwork is labeled stretched, it means the canvas has been wrapped around a wooden frame (the ''stretcher''). Stretched canvases typically do not require framing.
A one-of-a-kind artwork is a unique piece handmade by the artist. There is only one in existence. The work may be part of a series, however, the piece itself is unlike any other.
